The University of Chicago celebrated its 539th Convocation on June 7, 2025, with a ceremony marked by calls for resilience and future leadership. Prof. Kunle Odunsi addressed the graduating Class of 2025, acknowledging the challenges they have faced and urging them to contribute positively to an uncertain world.
“It is precisely in moments like this, when our foundations feel unsteady, that we must recommit ourselves to excellence to forge a stronger future,” said Odunsi. He emphasized the need for graduates to become advocates for progress and innovation.
University President Paul Alivisatos encouraged graduates to carry forward UChicago's values as they enter a rapidly changing world shaped by technological advancements such as AI. “You are ready to lead in this world. You are not just graduates of this University—you are stewards of its ethos,” he stated.
Odunsi, drawing from his career in immunotherapy and cancer research at UChicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center, inspired students with his personal journey from Nigeria to becoming a leader in innovative treatments. He stressed the importance of pursuing new possibilities and achieving landmark goals like curing cancer.
Class Day events featured student speakers Lila Melkumova, Dhirpal Shah, and Helen Wu reflecting on their experiences at UChicago. David Axelrod also addressed students about public service and community engagement.
Sophie Tedesco received the Hugo F. Sonnenschein Medal of Excellence for her academic achievements and leadership in justice reform. The university also honored faculty members with teaching awards and granted an honorary degree to climate scientist Eli Tziperman from Harvard University.
In closing remarks, Odunsi charged graduates with making meaningful contributions: “Go forth. You are unstoppable... Together, you will make this country and world a better place.”
