UIC addresses international student support amid policy changes

The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) has announced updates concerning international students and budgetary challenges, highlighting the ongoing uncertainties faced by higher education institutions.

In a statement, UIC emphasized its commitment to maintaining a diverse international student body. "Without question, our international students and scholars make UIC a better institution," the university stated. The administration is currently evaluating recent changes in visa policies and their potential impact on international students. To support these students, UIC offers resources such as an after-hours emergency hotline operated by the Office of International Services.

UIC also provides financial assistance through the U & I Care Fund and the Graduate College Emergency Fund for students facing emergencies. Faculty and staff are encouraged to guide affected students to these resources.

On the financial front, UIC is grappling with budget uncertainty following the termination of $15 million in federal research grants, including $5 million in overhead costs. The university is actively contesting these terminations while acknowledging broader issues such as restrictions on indirect cost recovery and slowed visa issuance contributing to financial pressures.

The proposed federal budget presents additional challenges with cuts to financial aid and research funding alongside new Medicaid restrictions. Although state commitments to higher education offer some relief, they are insufficient to offset federal funding losses.

In response, UIC plans several measures: implementing a 5% reduction in general spending across administrative units (excluding colleges and clinics), suspending merit increases for administrative leaders, and maintaining a hiring chill with increased scrutiny on large investments.

These actions aim to preserve resources for core missions related to student support, research strength, and clinical access. The university remains committed to its values of access and excellence despite current challenges.

Chancellor Marie Lynn Miranda expressed understanding of concerns arising from these decisions but emphasized that "our highest priority remains clear: to support our community with intention, thoughtfulness, and resolve."
