The Chicago Blackhawks have unveiled plans for the expansion of the Fifth Third Arena, which has been under renovation since May 2024. The project is set to transform the facility into a major hub for sports and community activities in Chicago. Originally opened in 2017, the arena will feature over 250,000 square feet dedicated to community hockey space and state-of-the-art training facilities upon completion in January 2026.
Danny Wirtz, Chairman & CEO of the Chicago Blackhawks, emphasized the significance of this development: “Through the Fifth Third Arena expansion, we are creating the epicenter of hockey in the Midwest.” Jaime Faulkner, President of Business Operations for the team, added that their goal is to create a place where people can connect with both the team and community.
The expanded arena is expected to attract more than one and a half million visitors annually. It aims to boost economic growth on Chicago’s West Side and will serve as a key destination for youth and amateur hockey. Additionally, it will become home to the Chicago Steel USHL team.
Wirtz expressed enthusiasm about bringing the Steel back to Chicago: “Players will have access to top-tier resources they need to train, compete and win championships.”
New renderings highlight various features such as Championship Arena with seating for 2,000 spectators; Centennial Hall celebrating Blackhawks history; Rocky’s Bar offering food and beverage options; lounges designed for families; an open-air patio with skyline views; and a commemorative Walk of Fame sidewalk.
Wirtz noted that Fifth Third Arena would be ideal for hosting diverse events year-round: “We will now be able to host 365-day programming, private events and offerings that weren’t possible before our expansion.”
Construction is scheduled for completion by January 2026.
