University of Chicago Class Day celebrates graduates with speeches from students and David Axelrod

At the University of Chicago's Class Day on June 6, 2025, graduating students reflected on their experiences and the lessons learned during their time at the College. The ceremony featured speeches by fourth-year students Lila Melkumova, Dhirpal Shah, and Helen Wu, who were chosen by their peers to speak about their UChicago journeys.

Wu described her daily walks to class as moments that allowed her to appreciate her time at UChicago. She remarked, "And now, in these final walks, I spot the faces of beloved friends, family members and teammates—a collection of future scientists, pioneers, artists and teachers who will touch countless lives, just as they have touched mine."

Melkumova highlighted the transformative nature of her college experience. "We were always crossing into something uncertain," she said. "And somehow, look around—we made it! Even when we couldn’t see the other side, we kept going together."

Shah shared his personal journey of finding a sense of belonging at UChicago after living in both India and Taiwan. He noted that differences once made him anxious but eventually became celebrated traits. "At UChicago," he explained, "the differences that once made me anxious became the very things that made me feel seen."

The keynote address was delivered by political analyst David Axelrod. Reflecting on his own time at UChicago and its impact on his life and career, Axelrod stated: “But thinking back to my own years as a student... I’m also a little surprised,” adding humorously about what his professors might think.

Axelrod encouraged graduates to embrace uncertainty while recognizing their power to effect change: “Regardless of where you go from here or what you do... your voices... will make the difference.”

The event also included awards presentations such as the Llewellyn John and Harriet Manchester Quantrell Awards for undergraduate teaching excellence. Sophie Tedesco received recognition with the Hugo F. Sonnenschein Medal of Excellence for leadership in justice reform and community advocacy.

Class Day marked the beginning of Convocation weekend with further ceremonies planned for June 7 across campus.
