Habilitative Systems unveils new $1.25M headquarters in Chicago

Habilitative Systems, Inc. recently marked the reopening of its headquarters in Chicago's Austin neighborhood, following a significant renovation project amounting to $1.25 million. With the backing of various federal, state, and local leaders, the organization has upgraded its facilities to enhance mental health and employment services.

Donald Dew, President and CEO of Habilitative Systems, Inc., expressed his satisfaction with the project's completion and acknowledged the dedication of the organization's staff. "On behalf of our entire team, we are proud to dedicate this newly revitalized facility today," Dew stated. He emphasized, "The space, which has become quite rundown over the years, has now been completely revitalized, and we are excited to see it serve our community once again."

The transformation of HSI’s headquarters was celebrated on March 28 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, attended by numerous officials and community members at the Larry T. Byrd Administrative Building. This event, led by Board Chair Melvin Brooks, featured remarks from elected officials such as Congressman Danny K. Davis, State Senator Kakesia Collins, State Rep. La Shawn Ford, Cook County Commissioner Tara Stamps, Ald. Walter Burnett, Jr., City Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin, and Ald. Jason Ervin.

HSI's renovation effort reflects its sustained commitment to delivering quality services in employment training, mental health, and crisis intervention on Chicago's West Side. Alderman Burnett highlighted the community's challenges, saying, "Our communities have dealt with a lot, and it shows in the various ways we navigate through life and its challenges."

This renovation was made possible by substantial funding contributions. Congressman Davis secured $500,000, Senator Collins provided $400,000, with Proven IT, Republic Services, and Rebuilding Together contributing a total of $350,000. Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford enabled $1.25 million in capacity-building funds earlier last year.

The Larry T. Byrd Administrative Building, since 1978, has been the headquarters for Habilitative Systems, one of Chicago's leading behavioral and human services agencies. In addition to its main facility, HSI now operates 16 locations, extending its reach to Chicago's South Side.

City Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin emphasized the long-term benefits of this investment, stating, "Investing in this facility is not only a smart decision—it helps save money in the long term by reducing costs associated with jails, hospitals, and other related expenses."

The event underscored HSI's ongoing commitment to supporting both the community and the professionals who serve within it.
