Precautions urged as cold weather approaches during Thanksgiving week

A significant drop in temperatures is expected this week, bringing cold and wintery weather conditions for Thanksgiving Day and the following weekend. As many individuals from the campus community plan to leave for the holiday, they are advised to take precautions to prevent weather-related damage to campus buildings.

Campus officials urge everyone to ensure that all windows, doors, and entryways are securely closed. Room thermostats should be set to at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit, with fan coils left on medium settings. It is also recommended to turn off lights, computers, appliances, and any other nonessential equipment when possible.

In laboratories and research facilities, optimizing equipment settings can help reduce energy consumption. This includes machines on timers and specialized equipment such as ovens, incubators, freezers, coolers, microscopy tools, and MRI machines.

Any unusual room temperatures or signs of water leaks or flooding should be reported immediately to Facilities Management at 312-996-7511. This department operates around the clock to address such issues promptly. For problems specifically at a UI Health facility, individuals should call 312-996-5084.

For further assistance or inquiries regarding these matters, Facilities Management can be contacted via email at servdesk@uic.edu.

"Thank you for your cooperation," officials stated. "Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving."
