Angela J. Green has been appointed as the new Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Family & Support Services (DFSS), according to an announcement from Mayor Brandon Johnson. Green brings more than 25 years of executive experience in human services, having worked across nonprofit, state, and federal systems. Most recently, she served as Regional Administrator for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families (ACF), overseeing operations in six Midwestern states and 35 Tribal Nations.
“With in-depth experience working at every level of government, Angela brings unparalleled knowledge and expertise to this vital role,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson. “Her career-long commitment to forging equitable, whole family solutions which drive lasting impact for vulnerable populations makes Angela perfectly suited to lead DFSS forward and meet the needs of working families in Chicago. From addressing the needs of our unhoused residents to supporting our seniors and our youth employment initiatives, DFSS plays a critical role in our city and Angela is the leader we need in this moment to continue the progress we’ve made.”
Green expressed her appreciation for the appointment. “I’m honored by this appointment and grateful for the opportunity to serve the people of Chicago,” said Angela J. Green. “I am excited to get to work strengthening partnerships between the City and our communities as DFSS builds on its mission to provide dignity, accountability, and opportunity for every family.”
Maura McCauley, Acting DFSS Commissioner, also commented on Green’s selection: “Angela Green is strong choice to lead DFSS,” said Maura McCauley. “Angela’s deep experience as a compassionate human services leader and her proven track record in the public and private sector demonstrate that she understands the challenges and opportunities that DFSS faces as the team strives to deliver on it’s mission of connecting Chicago residents and families to resources that build stability, support their well-being, and empower them to thrive.”
During her tenure at ACF, Green led efforts such as ACF’s Annual Midwest Economic Mobility Summit—a collaboration among ten states aimed at promoting economic mobility for vulnerable groups—and launched initiatives focused on housing solutions for survivors of human trafficking as well as multi-agency projects targeting family well-being, workforce stabilization in early care settings, and homelessness prevention.
Previously, Green was Deputy Director of Practice Support at Indiana’s Department of Child Services where she helped modernize child welfare infrastructure and improved case management systems for staff. She also served as Vice President at Children’s Bureau, Inc., developing Indiana’s first community-based initiative aimed at preventing child abuse.
Green holds a Master of Social Work from Indiana University and is a Senior Executive Fellow with Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.
