University of Illinois Chicago launches new mental health training modules for students

The University of Illinois System has introduced new mental health training modules for students at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). The modules are voluntary and aim to help students recognize signs of mental health challenges, respond with supportive strategies, and connect with appropriate campus and system resources.

Students can access these modules through the Mental Health Awareness and Support website. The website also provides links to mental health resources across the University of Illinois System and information about the annual Mental Health and Wellbeing Symposium, which is scheduled for October 14.

At UIC, the new modules supplement the ongoing Mental Health First Aid training initiative. This program, offered free to UIC students, faculty, and staff, is nationally recognized and provides participants with skills to identify and respond to signs of mental health challenges and substance use.

Michael Ginsburg, PhD, Special Advisor to the Chancellor for Student Affairs, stated: "At UIC, your well-being is central to our mission of fostering a thriving, health-promoting campus. We are committed to creating the conditions for you to succeed academically and personally by embedding care and well-being into every aspect of campus life."

He added: "By participating in these opportunities, you are strengthening your own skills while contributing to a culture of care and belonging at UIC. Together, we are advancing our shared vision of becoming a health-promoting university."

The university encourages participation in these programs as part of its broader effort to support student well-being.
