Marie Lynn Miranda UIC Chancellor | University Of Illinois At Chicago
The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a campus environment where all individuals are valued and included. As the new academic year begins, UIC leadership emphasized the university’s dedication to inclusivity, dignity, and respect for every member of its community.
According to UIC, ensuring access, equity, inclusion, and excellence remains central to its mission. The Office for Access and Equity oversees compliance with employment and nondiscrimination policies. Discrimination or harassment is not permitted on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, ancestry, age, marital status, order of protection status, genetic information, disability, pregnancy, sexual orientation including gender identity, unfavorable discharge from the military, protected veteran status or any other protected categories under state and federal law. These protections extend to all members of the campus community.
Resources are available through the Office for Access and Equity for those who have experienced discrimination or harassment. The office works closely with campus partners to ensure that complaint resolution procedures are fair and equitable. Individuals experiencing harassment or discrimination based on protected categories are encouraged to report incidents online.
The office also manages compliance related to sexual misconduct complaints and works to prevent and respond to sex discrimination under UIC’s Comprehensive Policy and Procedure on Sex Discrimination, Including Harassment. Sexual misconduct includes sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, sexual harassment and stalking. Certain employees at UIC are mandatory reporters required to notify the office about any reports of sexual misconduct. Those experiencing such issues can report them online.
Information about accommodations for pregnancy and parenting—including lactation spaces—is provided by UIC. The Office for Access and Equity facilitates ADA accommodations for employees with disabilities while students can access resources through the Disability Resource Center.
Religious accommodations are also available at UIC along with a religious holiday calendar for reference.
UIC continues its efforts toward equal opportunity through outreach initiatives aimed at inclusive recruitment practices so that all qualified individuals feel welcome on campus. Guidelines regarding search procedures can be found on their website.
Prevention services such as confidential consultations, mediations and training sessions are offered by Dispute Resolution Services within the Office for Access and Equity. The office also leads the Behavioral Threat Assessment Team which coordinates support services in response to violence or threats involving faculty, staff or visitors.
"Thank you for fostering a campus of inclusivity, civility and belonging for everyone."
