Illinois Institute of Technology is set to honor Ralph Wanger, a prominent figure in investment and philanthropy, with an Honorary Doctor of Management degree. The ceremony will take place during the university's 156th Commencement at Credit Union 1 Arena. Wanger is celebrated for his achievements as a small-cap money manager and his significant contributions to Illinois Tech through philanthropy and leadership.
"Receiving this honorary degree from Illinois Tech is deeply meaningful to me," said Wanger. "Supporting Illinois Tech has been one of the most rewarding investments of my life."
Wanger began his career as a securities analyst at Harris Associates in 1960 after earning degrees from MIT. He became portfolio manager of the Acorn Fund in 1970, achieving a remarkable annualized return over 33 years. He later founded Wanger Asset Management, which was acquired by Columbia Funds in 2000.
Beyond finance, Wanger has served on Illinois Tech’s Board of Trustees and played roles in various committees. In recognition of his dedication, he was named University Regent in 2014.
"Ralph Wanger’s contributions to the Illinois Tech community are incalculable," stated Raj Echambadi, President of Illinois Tech.
In 2007, Wanger established the Wanger Institute for Sustainable Energy Research (WISER), focusing on global energy challenges. His support helped secure funding for clean energy research initiatives.
"Ralph Wanger’s visionary support has been instrumental," said Hamid Arastoopour, director of WISER.
Wanger authored "A Zebra in Lion Country: Ralph Wanger’s Guide to Investment Survival," enhancing his reputation as a leader in small-cap investing. He manages personal investments through RW Investments and remains influential in finance and sustainability sectors.
"Ralph’s unwavering belief...has shaped the future of our university and our planet," commented Rich Klein, dean of Stuart School of Business.
Wanger is also involved with architecture preservation efforts at Illinois Tech and received the Galvin Award for non-alumni supporters in 2011. His family is recognized among top benefactors at the university.
“Ralph Wanger has not only achieved historic success as an investor but also demonstrated extraordinary commitment,” said Michael P. Galvin, Chair of Illinois Tech Board.
