UChicago student Samantha Taylor named Knight-Hennessy Scholar

Samantha Taylor, a University of Chicago student, has been named a Knight-Hennessy Scholar. This recognition allows her to continue her education in social justice and public policy at Stanford Law School, where she will focus on civil rights and criminal law.

Taylor, who is majoring in public policy and philosophy, expressed that any opportunity challenging her principles or the impact she aims to make is not worth pursuing. The Knight-Hennessy program offers up to three years of support for graduate studies at Stanford to students tackling global challenges. As an Odyssey Scholar, Taylor values the financial relief this provides.

Her experiences growing up in Chicagoland influenced her commitment to addressing racial inequity and mass incarceration. Recalling being present at a mass shooting during an eighth-grade graduation party, Taylor said such events shape how she navigates different spaces and situations.

The civil rights movements following the deaths of George Floyd and Trayvon Martin significantly impacted Taylor's perspective on society. She feels responsible for using her educational opportunities to uplift those without the tools to address issues faced by their communities.

During her time at UChicago, Taylor engaged in research and internships with various organizations including the university’s Institute of Politics and the Policing Project in New York City. These experiences guided her professional aspirations toward addressing mass incarceration through public defense or systemic intervention via appellate law.

Looking further ahead, Taylor aims to transition into politics to advocate for equitable legislation. Her philosophy degree provided her with a critical mindset for seeking new social solutions as emphasized by the Knight-Hennessy program. She credits UChicago for instilling confidence and encouraging inquiry into challenging societal norms.

Taylor received interview support from the College’s Office of National Fellowships which assists students applying for competitive awards like Knight-Hennessy by helping them articulate their talents and journeys towards making a better world.
