Illinois Institute of Technology (Illinois Tech) is set to honor Gerald Chan, a prominent figure in biotechnology and health care innovation, with an Honorary Doctor of Health Physics at its 156th Commencement ceremony. The event will take place today at Credit Union 1 Arena.
Gerald Chan, co-founder of Morningside, has significantly contributed to the launch of over two dozen biotech companies that are transforming medicine. "I am honored to receive this recognition from Illinois Tech, whose mission to advance technology in service of society resonates deeply with my own values," says Chan. He expressed hope for future scientists and entrepreneurs to further push boundaries in healthcare innovation.
Chan's career has been marked by pioneering efforts in developing treatments for various diseases and integrating artificial intelligence into medical platforms. He is the chairman of Apellis Pharmaceuticals and serves on the boards of several biotech firms.
"Gerald Chan’s ability to translate research into real-world solutions has transformed the health care landscape," states Illinois Tech President Raj Echambadi. Chan's work aligns with Illinois Tech's focus on breakthrough science and entrepreneurial leadership.
Apart from his business ventures, Chan holds roles such as trustee at the Scripps Research Institute and member of advisory boards at prestigious institutions like Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Jennifer deWinter, dean of Illinois Tech’s Lewis College of Science and Letters, remarks, "Gerald Chan is a true pioneer at the intersection of technology and health." His contributions are seen as accelerating innovation and equity in healthcare.
Chan's academic background includes a Doctorate in Radiation Biology from Harvard University. His accolades include seven honorary degrees from various universities worldwide and election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
