The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) celebrated the achievements of its students and the progress made in 2024. The chancellor expressed joy in witnessing 2,985 graduates at the recent commencement ceremony, highlighting their accomplishments as evidence of the institution's impactful work.
In a message reflecting on student success, UIC was acknowledged for its role in promoting social mobility. It was ranked 10th among U.S. universities and first in Illinois by U.S. News & World Report and The Wall Street Journal, respectively.
A student success working group was established last year to enhance effective practices across the campus. This initiative identified eight essential elements for improving student outcomes: recruitment and degree pathways, pre-matriculation programs, financial support, intensive advising, teaching and learning innovation, responsive academic support, research and experiential learning, and health and well-being resources.
These efforts have led to a 1.3% increase in the six-year graduation rate and a 1.8% improvement in retention rates across various demographics including racial and ethnic groups, Pell Grant recipients, non-Pell recipients, first-generation students, and continuing-generation students. Looking forward, UIC aims to boost graduation rates by 10 percentage points over the next decade.
UIC's mission remains focused on providing access to high-quality education, research opportunities, and clinical excellence for its community. As they approach 2025, there is optimism about future achievements despite challenges.
The chancellor concluded with holiday wishes for rest and rejuvenation.
