Amazon has released its 2024 economic impact report, detailing the company's influence on job creation and economic opportunities across the United States and local impact across Illinois and the Chicagoland area. The report was developed in collaboration with Keystone Strategy and Amazon's internal economists.
According to Amazon, the company has contributed over $1 trillion to the U.S. economy, supporting GDP growth. It supports nearly 5 million jobs nationwide, including direct employment and positions created through investments in local communities. In addition to its workforce, Amazon's marketplace enables over 1.8 million people to be employed by small and medium-sized businesses that sell on its platform. The company's investments in rural areas and small towns have also contributed to job creation and economic growth in those regions.
The Economic Impact Report states that since 2010, Amazon has invested $28 billion in Illinois, enhancing the state's infrastructure and employee compensation. These investments have improved Illinois' GDP by $31 billion and created 40,000 full- and part-time jobs as of January 2023. Additionally, Amazon supports 50,600 indirect jobs based on the Input-Output methodology developed by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. The company partners with over 15,000 independent sellers, primarily small and medium-sized businesses.
Amazon's presence in Illinois includes numerous facilities: 27 fulfillment and sortation centers, 16 delivery stations, one grocery hub, one air hub, 26 Whole Foods Market locations, five Amazon Go store locations, four Amazon Hub Locker+ locations, two Prime Now fulfillment centers, nine Amazon Fresh retail locations, two wind farms, six solar farms, and one on-site solar location.
The company provides a range of services such as online and in-person shopping; delivery of fresh produce; media distribution; devices like Alexa and Fire TV; cloud solutions through Amazon Web Services (AWS); logistics; customer service; and entertainment via platforms like Amazon Originals, Prime Video, and Audible.
