A 23-year-old man from Chicago has been charged with attempted murder following a shooting at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Evergreen Park, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced. The incident occurred on January 29 during a burial service when the suspect allegedly shot two men, aged 25 and 24, after an altercation.
Both victims were transported to a nearby hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening. Additionally, the suspect reportedly pointed a firearm at another individual during the event.
Sheriff's Police officers apprehended Roger Nava near the cemetery shortly after the incident. Nava was found in possession of two loaded firearms and matched the description of the shooter provided by witnesses.
Following further investigation, detectives identified Nava as the perpetrator of the crime. On January 30, three counts of attempted first-degree murder were approved against him by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Nava is set to make his initial court appearance today at Markham Courthouse. Authorities remind the public that all defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty in court.
