Karriem Watson appointed executive director at UI Health Mile Square

The UI Health Mile Square Health Center has announced the appointment of Karriem Watson, DHSc, MS, MPH, as its new executive director. His tenure is set to begin on December 1, 2024, pending approval from the University of Illinois Board of Trustees. Watson was chosen after a comprehensive national search that considered many qualified candidates for this leadership role.

Watson brings extensive experience from his previous position as chief engagement officer for the All of Us Research Program at the National Institutes of Health. In that capacity, he worked to build relationships with participants and communities across the United States to create a diverse health database aimed at studying health and illness. His efforts were particularly focused on engaging populations underrepresented in scientific research.

Before joining the National Institutes of Health, Watson spent over 15 years working in community-engaged research within the Mile Square Health Center network and Chicagoland area. He also held roles such as associate executive director at Mile Square Health Center and associate director of community outreach and engagement for the University of Illinois Cancer Center. Additionally, he served as a research assistant professor in the UIC School of Public Health.

Watson holds a doctorate degree in health science with a focus on global health, alongside master's degrees in basic medical research and public health with a concentration in community health sciences. His career includes serving as principal investigator on projects funded by organizations like the National Cancer Institute and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute. He has been recognized by entities such as the Chicago Urban League and American Heart Association for his contributions.

The announcement included appreciation for Henry Taylor, who is retiring after more than 28 years as executive director at Mile Square Health Center. Taylor's leadership helped enhance both care offerings and national reputation.

This transition marks Watson's return to UI Health where he previously contributed significantly to various initiatives.
