Northwestern University hosts briefing on state of local news report

Kathleen Hagerty Provost | Northwestern University

Professor Tim Franklin from Northwestern University will host a virtual briefing on October 23 to discuss the findings of the 2024 State of Local News report. The event, organized by the Medill Local News Initiative, will address the ongoing decline of local newspapers and the expansion of "news deserts" across America. These areas are characterized by limited or no access to reliable local news.

The study provides a comprehensive county-by-county analysis of local news outlets nationwide. It includes a "Bright Spots" map that highlights emerging local news startups in the U.S. over the past five years. Additionally, Medill has profiled 12 promising local news organizations with sustainable business models.

Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions after presentations by Franklin, Zach Metzger, Director of the State of Local News Project, and contributing editors Autumn Brewington and Paul Farhi.

Registration is required for those wishing to attend this virtual event.
