Lightfoot: 'Young people across the city deserve to engage in safe, inspiring activities, as well as paid opportunities'

The Chicago Department of Family and Support Services (DFSS) has rolled out the application portal for the 2023 One Summer Chicago program, designed to provide in-person job and life skills training to young people.

According to Chicago.gov, Mayor Lori Lightfoot is teaming up with DFSS for the program, which will give young people aged 14 to 24 training and career and life skills, with the program running from June 26 to Aug. 4. Lightfoot's office also noted that participants will earn $15.40 per hour across all Chicago departments.

“Young people across the city deserve to engage in safe, inspiring activities, as well as paid opportunities for the time when they are not in school,” Lightfoot said, according to Chicago.gov. “One Summer Chicago invests in thousands of summer work experiences to support Chicago's youth, elevate their professional skills, and give them an opportunity to earn a paycheck. I'm proud to continue this program to empower our youth and prepare them for success.”

The deadline to apply for the program is June 2, according to Chicago.gov, and young people interested in applying can visit One Summer Chicago for more information. The website indicates that there will be more applicants than job opportunities for the summer program, so OSC reminds applicants to apply for other opportunities and keep their options open.

The program also offers an opportunity for teens and young adults to explore career options while making a difference in their communities, and it offers a variety of activities that enhance personal growth and community development as participants gain experience in technology, health care and media.

“When you connect a young person to a job or a service opportunity, you are connecting them to their community,” DFSS Commissioner Brandie Knazze told Chicago.gov. “OSC is investing in our communities by giving Chicago youth the chance to explore their interests, develop their passions and build their own pathways to the future.”
