Chicago breaks ground on Legends South A3 affordable housing complex

Today, Mayor Brandon Johnson attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the Legends South A3 affordable housing complex in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood. The event was also attended by city officials, Alderwoman Pat Dowell, Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) Commissioner Angela Hurlock, and representatives from Michaels Organization, Imagine Group, and GMA Construction.

Mayor Johnson emphasized the importance of the project in addressing historical disinvestment in the area. "Today we’re turning the page on the legacy of disinvestment which has for too long left spaces like this vacant in the heart of our communities," he said. "This project adds a new and dynamic development to this neighborhood."

Alderwoman Pat Dowell highlighted the significance of affordable housing for local families. “This development will bring more units of affordable housing to our community to ensure that families can stay together in Bronzeville,” she stated.

The Department of Housing (DOH) and Department of Planning and Development (DPD) supported the project with financial contributions totaling $14.4 million from various funds.

DOH Commissioner Lissette Castañeda remarked on the project's impact on housing justice. “Legends South A3 stands as a powerful testament to our shared commitment to housing justice,” she noted.

The development is part of an ongoing transformation at the former Robert Taylor Homes site and will include 52 residential units across two buildings, along with commercial space. Andrea Keeney from The Michaels Organization expressed pride in their involvement: “We’re proud to be a part of a partnership that’s bringing long-term investment and revitalization.”

Interim CHA Board Chairman Matthew Brewer spoke about recent achievements in expanding housing options: “This year alone, we’ve celebrated grand openings at Edith Spurlock Sampson and Sheffield Residences... Together with the latest phase of Legends South... these efforts are powerful examples.”

The complex aims to revitalize State Street's commercial corridor while providing new retail opportunities for residents.
