Tom Ricketts receives Daniel H. Burnham Award at annual Chicagoland Chamber event

More than 700 business and civic leaders gathered at the Hilton Chicago on November 17, 2025, to honor Tom Ricketts with the Daniel H. Burnham Award for Distinguished Leadership. The award, presented by the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, recognizes individuals whose vision and service reflect Daniel Burnham’s legacy of ambitious city-building.

The event began with a reception before guests moved into the Grand Ballroom for the formal program. Attendees heard from several speakers who highlighted Ricketts’ impact on Chicago through his roles as Executive Chairman of the Chicago Cubs and as an advocate for economic development and community engagement.

During his remarks, Jack Lavin, President and CEO of the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, drew parallels between Ricketts’ leadership and that of Daniel Burnham. “And just like Daniel Burnham more than a century ago, we need the business community to lead the way once again. We have a key role to play as ambassadors and as champions for Chicago — to tell our story, to invest in our people, and to not just believe in — but to help build — our city’s future,” Lavin said.

Tom Ricketts delivered an acceptance speech focused on collaboration and shared responsibility. He noted: “Daniel Burnham had more than just great quotes — he had great partners,” emphasizing that partnerships are essential for progress in Chicago.

Reflecting on receiving the award, Ricketts said: “Looking at the award, they have my name on it, but it’s just a placeholder. It’s a placeholder that represents the hundreds of people that have contributed to everything we’ve been able to accomplish.” He thanked business collaborators, community organizations, his family, and especially acknowledged support from within the Chicagoland Chamber.

Ricketts also addressed both challenges and strengths facing Chicago: “We all know Chicago has its flaws, but we all love our city. While we can discuss amongst ourselves the challenges that the city is facing, hopefully we can keep our differences among us and show a united face.” He pointed out assets such as culture, infrastructure, research institutions, commercial opportunity, natural resources, civic engagement efforts—and called upon attendees not to waste these resources: “With the people in this room…we also have a great responsibility. A responsibility not to waste these resources.”

The evening included musical performances celebrating both Ricketts’ contributions and Chicago’s spirit. The event concluded with congratulations from Chamber leadership and thanks extended to sponsors and participants.
