Marie Lynn Miranda UIC Chancellor | University Of Illinois At Chicago
The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) has issued its semesterly reminder to students and employees regarding its Alcohol and Other Drugs Policy, in compliance with federal Drug-Free Schools and Campuses Regulations. The policy is part of UIC’s ongoing efforts to maintain a drug-free environment for all members of the campus community.
According to the university, the policy and accompanying resource guide outline responsibilities, standards of conduct, and expectations for both students and staff. These documents also provide information on education, prevention, and support resources available at UIC.
The development of this policy aligns with federal legislation, specifically the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988 and the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act Amendments of 1989. Key components include prohibitions against drug and alcohol abuse on campus, possible disciplinary actions for violations, applicable legal penalties under federal, state, or local law, details about health risks associated with substance use, as well as access to university and community-based prevention programs.
UIC clarified its stance on cannabis use: despite changes in Illinois state law permitting certain uses of cannabis, it remains prohibited on campus due to its classification as a Schedule I controlled substance under federal law. This ban applies to all forms of possession or use—recreational or medical—on university property or during any university activity.
"The policy reflects UIC’s continued commitment to fostering a health-promoting campus, where prevention, education and care are integrated into the student and employee experience. Please take time to review the policy and resource guide, not only to understand the standards and expectations, but also to learn about the resources available to support your health, safety and success," said Michael Ginsburg, PhD., Special Advisor to the Chancellor for Student Affairs.
