UIC marks ADA's 35th anniversary with commitment to accessibility

Marie Lynn Miranda UIC Chancellor | University Of Illinois At Chicago

The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) is marking the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a landmark law signed by President George H. Bush on July 26, 1990. The ADA ensures equal opportunity, economic self-sufficiency, independent living, and equitable participation for people with disabilities in American life.

UIC and UI Health emphasize their commitment to inclusivity for all students, faculty, staff, patients, and visitors with disabilities across employment opportunities, programs, activities, and services. This includes ensuring access to digital content.

In April 2024, Title II of the ADA was amended to include technical standards for digital content such as course materials and websites. UIC pledges to maintain an inclusive environment for everyone.

Employees requiring job accommodations can visit the Employment Accommodation Procedure page or contact the university’s ADA coordinator at pberg@uic.edu or call 312-996-0512. Students needing accommodations should reach out to the Disability Resource Center via email at drc@uic.edu or phone at 312-413-2183.

Additional resources include Digital Accessibility initiatives, the Disability Cultural Center, and the Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of Persons with Disabilities.

Caryn Bills serves as Associate Chancellor in the Office for Access and Equity while Peter Berg is noted as UIC's ADA Coordinator.
