UIC introduces expanded U-PASS options with Metra Rail inclusion

Marie Lynn Miranda UIC Chancellor | University Of Illinois At Chicago

UIC students now have the option to enhance their U-PASS benefits by adding Metra Rail through the U-PASS+ program. This addition allows unlimited rides on any line, except the South Shore Line, providing broader access to the Chicagoland area.

To participate in the U-PASS or U-PASS+ programs for Fall 2025, students must opt in at the start of each fall semester. The programs are available to those taking six or more credit hours. The active period for these passes is from August 20 to December 17, with specific dates for the College of Medicine and College of Dentistry.

The deadline to opt out is September 10 at 11:59 p.m., after which no changes can be made until the end of the session. Students dropping below six credit hours before the add/drop deadline will have their passes deactivated.

Fees for Fall 2025 are set at $163 for most students using CTA only and $380 for those adding Metra. College of Medicine students face slightly higher fees.

Distribution of U-PASS cards will occur on specified dates in August at Student Center East. Students are encouraged to verify their status on the U-PASS webpage, and standard policies apply for lost or replacement cards.

Faculty and staff can also benefit from UIC’s commuter options.
