Lionel Allen, EdD, has been appointed as the interim vice chancellor for equity and diversity at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), effective July 1. This appointment is pending approval by the University of Illinois Board of Trustees.
This change in leadership comes after Charu Thakral decided to return to her position as executive associate vice chancellor in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Equity and Diversity, effective June 30. In acknowledging Dr. Thakral's contributions, it was stated: "I want to express my deep gratitude to Dr. Thakral for her outstanding service in the interim role since January 2024 and for her unwavering commitment to advancing opportunity and excellence at UIC."
Dr. Allen has a longstanding relationship with UIC, having graduated from its EdD Urban Education Leadership program in 2016. Since 2018, he has served as a faculty member in the College of Education, holding positions such as clinical associate professor in the Department of Educational Policy Studies and co-coordinator of the EdD program.
With over two decades of experience in P-12 education roles including teacher, assistant principal, principal, and chief academic officer, Dr. Allen is recognized as a passionate educator and leader. His work at UIC involves teaching courses on cycles of inquiry and supporting instructional leadership development.
The appointment aims to ensure continuity within the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Equity and Diversity while a search for a permanent vice chancellor remains on hold amid evaluations of changes within higher education.
Community members are encouraged to acknowledge Dr. Thakral's leadership while welcoming Dr. Allen into his new role: "Please join me in thanking Dr. Thakral for her exceptional leadership and warmly welcoming Dr. Allen to this important role."
