Dan Lynch shares insights at Emerging Leaders Chicago fireside chat

Emerging Leaders Chicago recently organized a Fireside Chat featuring Dan Lynch, Vice President of State and Local Government Affairs at United Airlines and Chair of the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. The event was aimed at providing career insights and leadership lessons to young professionals in the region.

Dan Lynch, who has been with United Airlines for 19 years, leads state and local government affairs across the U.S., building relationships with elected officials and civic leaders. His previous roles include Managing Director of Corporate and Government Affairs. Before joining United Airlines, Lynch worked in Washington, DC for the U.S. Government Accountability Office and as a legislative aide to U.S. Senator Herb Kohl.

Reflecting on his career path, Lynch stated: “My experience in government was absolutely crucial to the career I ended up in.” He emphasized that career paths are rarely straightforward: “Like many of you, I went to college and I thought I knew what I wanted to do, but I didn’t actually know what I wanted to do.”

Lynch shared several key takeaways during the chat:

- Be open to evolving interests.

- Consider changing locations for new opportunities.

- On-the-job learning is invaluable.

- Learn from organizational leaders.

- Listening is an undervalued skill.

- Confidence is important early in one's career.

- Work quality and teamwork are essential.

- Engaging with boards can provide meaningful experiences.

As Chair of the Chamber's Board, Lynch plays a significant role in shaping its direction. He said: “As Board Chair, I’m there to help direct board meetings...and really be a cheerleader for the Chamber and business community.”

The event provided attendees with practical insights into leadership growth and community engagement.
