University of Chicago prepares for 2025 convocation events starting June 6

The University of Chicago is set to celebrate its 2025 Convocation with a series of events beginning June 6. The main ceremony will occur on Saturday, June 7, starting at 9:15 a.m., with a procession into the Main Quadrangles. During this event, President Paul Alivisatos will address the attendees and confer degrees.

Prof. Kunle Odunsi, an oncologist and director of the UChicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center, will serve as this year's Convocation faculty speaker.

The festivities commence on Friday, June 6, with Class Day at 2 p.m. This event will highlight speeches from David Axelrod, AB’76, who served as a senior advisor to former President Barack Obama and is the founding director of UChicago's Institute of Politics. Graduating students will also speak.

Throughout the weekend, various divisions and schools within UChicago will conduct their own diploma and hooding ceremonies. For those unable to attend in person, both Class Day and Convocation ceremonies will be webcast on the UChicago News website.

In recognition of outstanding teaching and mentorship, the University will present several awards during the main ceremony on June 7. These include the Llewellyn John and Harriet Manchester Quantrell Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching and Faculty Awards for Excellence in Ph.D. Teaching and Mentoring. Additionally, an honorary degree will be awarded to climate scientist Eli Tziperman.

Attendees can find detailed information about the events on the Convocation website. It is important to note that parking restrictions and road closures will be enforced in Hyde Park throughout the weekend. Shuttles are available for transportation assistance via tracking at the UChicago Passio GO! website.

Security measures include bag inspections upon entering the Main Quadrangles. Items that could obstruct others' views or hearing during the ceremony are prohibited inside.
