Mayor Brandon Johnson has appointed Michael McMurray as the new commissioner for the Chicago Department of Aviation. McMurray brings over 25 years of experience in transportation and infrastructure, having most recently served as President of Transportation and Infrastructure at Wight & Company.
"Mike McMurray’s extensive experience in both the private and public sector will serve us well during this transformative period for our airports," stated Mayor Johnson. "His background in procurement, construction, and law are exactly what we need to navigate the challenges and opportunities that our airports present for the city."
McMurray expressed his enthusiasm for the role: "I’m honored to lead the Chicago Department of Aviation at such a pivotal time. Having worked in both the public and private sectors, I understand the complexity and importance of our airport system to Chicago’s economy and global standing."
Brett J. Hart, President of United Airlines, welcomed McMurray's appointment: "Our entire team at United is thrilled to welcome Mike McMurray... Mike’s leadership will be essential as we work collectively to deliver a modernized airport."
Nathan Gatten from American Airlines also congratulated McMurray: "We have a long history of serving Chicago... We look forward to working with Mike and his team to strengthen the only dual-hub in the nation."
Steve Sisneros from Southwest Airlines added: "We congratulate Michael McMurray on his appointment... As one of the few airlines serving both Midway and O’Hare, we look forward to working together with Commissioner McMurray."
At Wight & Company, McMurray was involved in strategic planning and growth initiatives. He has also practiced law within various organizations including Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Matt O’Shea, Chairman of the City Council Aviation Committee, commented on McMurray's integrity: "I know him to be a person of integrity and look forward to working with him."
McMurray holds degrees from Northwestern University and the University of Michigan. His career includes recognition by Crain’s Chicago Business as one of 2021 Notable Black Leaders.
The appointment awaits City Council confirmation.
