Illinois Institute of Technology has been recognized as an “Opportunity College and University” under a new classification by the American Council on Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. This classification underscores the university's exemplary metrics in education access and post-graduation outcomes, placing it among the top institutions worldwide.
According to Mallik Sundharam, vice president for enrollment management and student affairs, “This important national recognition reaffirms what has been at the heart of Illinois Tech’s mission for more than 130 years: education as a true engine of opportunity.” Sundharam highlighted the university’s commitment to empower students to achieve success both academically and professionally.
Illinois Tech, a private institution with a public mission, focuses on accessibility for all students, especially those from low-income backgrounds and first-generation college students. Its approach includes academic support, a sense of belonging, and career preparation, encapsulated in the “Student-First” initiative. This initiative integrates several success strategies like the Elevate program and a unified advising model, credited with enhancing student engagement and retention.
The Carnegie Classification checks access by comparing the enrollment of Pell Grant recipients and underrepresented student groups to surrounding demographics. It evaluates earnings by examining alumni salaries eight years post-enrollment compared to those with only a high school diploma.
Illinois Tech’s classification as one of the Opportunity Colleges and Universities, a title held by only 16% of institutions, highlights its role as a leader among technology, engineering, and science-focused schools. It demonstrates that the university effectively enrolls students from diverse communities and prepares them for competitive job markets.
Sundharam also noted, “Experiential learning is at the heart of an Illinois Tech education. Through hands-on experiences, our students graduate with both the knowledge and practical skills that employers seek.” He emphasized that the Elevate program provides students with real-world opportunities, reinforcing their career-readiness upon graduation.
Located in Chicago, Illinois Tech offers a range of degrees in fields such as engineering, computing, and business. The university is a pivotal player in advancing innovation and technology, promoting an environment where students can engage in transformative learning experiences.
