Exploring distinctive architecture and vibrant cities is a common passion for architects. Jlees Ahmed, a Bachelor of Architecture candidate from the class of 2025, has gathered international inspiration throughout his life. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Ahmed's fascination with urban landscapes was sparked early. His upbringing included frequent visits to London, his grandparents' home, offering him exposure to the city's architectural heritage.
“I was realizing the importance of architecture,” says Ahmed. “It clicked in high school that I want to do something more utilitarian than other forms of art.”
Despite a desire to stay close to family for his studies, Ahmed opted to attend Illinois Institute of Technology’s College of Architecture in Chicago. “It was the cheapest option with financial aid, and of course it’s in Chicago,” Ahmed says. “There are not many better places to study for an architect.”
In 2024, Ahmed secured an internship with the architecture firm Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, which operates in multiple cities including Oklahoma City. Encouraged by Assistant Professor Ryan Roark, Ahmed focused on adaptive reuse in his work, which he believes is a crucial strategy to address the climate crisis. “It’s the best tool for combatting the climate crisis,” Ahmed states.
Upon graduation, Ahmed will join the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. There, he will participate in the new Masters in Conservation and Reuse program, further exploring the renovation of buildings.
During his time at Illinois Tech, Ahmed contributed to the podcast Beyond the Surface, which prioritizes underrepresented voices in architecture. “There are other podcasts about design and architecture, but not often telling the story of the people behind the projects,” he mentions.
Chicago's architecture has captured Ahmed's appreciation, as evidenced by his frequent visits to the Art Institute of Chicago and his studio project, Lincoln Park Music Hall. He credits faculty, staff, and peers at the college for enhancing his educational experience.
“Anytime I hang out with friends, work with friends, they’re my favorite memories,” Ahmed reflects. “I look fondly at S. R. Crown Hall, and all we did in there.”
