The University of Chicago announced the recipients of the 2025 Alumni Awards, honoring distinguished graduates for their accomplishments in various professional fields, contributions to society, and commitment to the university's community. The prestigious awards include the Professional Achievement Award, Early Career Achievement Award, and Recent Alumni Service Award.
Melina Kibbe, current Dean of the University of Virginia School of Medicine, received the Professional Achievement Award for her significant contributions to the field of vascular surgery and biomedical research. Kibbe is recognized for her advocacy of sex-inclusive research and promotion of women in surgery. She holds numerous patents and academic achievements and has been acknowledged with several awards throughout her career.
Jennifer Levi, a longtime advocate in LGBTQ+ civil rights law, was also recognized with a Professional Achievement Award for her efforts in shaping legal protections for transgender individuals through strategic litigation. Her work in academia, along with her litigation work challenging healthcare restrictions for transgender individuals, highlights her dedication to improving civil rights.
Another awardee, Emilie Townes, was honored for her work in womanist theology and ethics. Her achievements include being elected as a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and founding the Womanist Leadership Hub.
The Early Career Achievement Award went to Sarah Langs, a prominent sportswriter and podcaster, known for her work with ESPN and Major League Baseball. Her career highlights include being part of the first all-female broadcast team for an MLB game and furthering the presence of women in sports journalism.
Jane Lopes received recognition for her achievements in the wine and hospitality industry. As a Master Sommelier and author, Lopes has addressed issues such as health and exploitation within the industry and co-founded the Australian wine import company, Legend.
The Recent Alumni Service Award honored Aaron Guo and Tomas Sutrinaitis for their efforts in fostering alumni engagement and contribution to investment and finance sectors. Guo, the founder of ProSights, has facilitated numerous networking and professional development opportunities for fellow alumni. Sutrinaitis, with his significant role at Origami Capital Partners, has been instrumental in expanding investment strategies and alumni events that support university initiatives.
Honorees will be acknowledged during the Alumni Weekend scheduled from May 1-4. The ceremony will also recognize Assoc. Prof. Emeritus Stephen Pruett-Jones and Prof. Emeritus Donald G. York with the Norman Maclean Faculty Award for exceptional contributions to student development and experience.
