University responds to ADL's Campus Antisemitism Report Card

Yesterday, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) released its 2025 Campus Antisemitism Report Card. The report includes an improved assessment of the University of Chicago and describes Jewish life on campus as “excellent.” However, the overall report card does not accurately reflect the University or its core values.

The University of Chicago has a long history as a home to a thriving Jewish community. The campus benefits from numerous Jewish student groups and organizations such as UChicago Hillel and Chabad at UChicago. An essential aspect of university support for all students is providing an environment where people can listen, learn, grow, share perspectives, and engage in a search for truth.

Antisemitism contradicts the values of the University of Chicago, just as other forms of bias and discrimination do. It is incompatible with their commitment to diversity and inclusion, ensuring that all campus community members can fully participate in university life.

One factor in the ADL’s report is whether an institution “publicly condemns” incidents of antisemitism. The University has consistently stated it does not tolerate actions that violate policy or law. This includes multiple messages from leadership emphasizing these points. At the same time, UChicago adheres to a longstanding tradition against taking collective stances on social or political issues outside its core mission, as articulated in the Kalven Report of 1967. This tradition supports upholding freedom for individual students, faculty members, and scholars to express their views.

The University does not tolerate violence, threats, intimidation or harassment directed at individuals or groups. This stance is reflected in university policy. They are committed to preventing such behavior and addressing any cases that arise. Anyone who experiences or witnesses discrimination is encouraged to report it to the Center for Awareness, Resolution, Education, and Support.
