Department of Education issues guidance on Supreme Court decision

The Department of Education issued a "Dear Colleague" letter on February 14, indicating plans to interpret the Supreme Court's decision in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard as extending beyond undergraduate admissions.

In response, the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) is assessing the potential implications with the help of University Counsel. UIC is also consulting national organizations and using its networks to gain clarity on how best to proceed. Updates and resources related to this issue will be available on UIC's Key Issues webpage.

Marie Lynn Miranda, Chancellor of UIC, emphasized their commitment to providing broad access to high levels of educational, research, and clinical excellence. "Access and excellence will always remain our most deeply held values even as we work to ensure that our policies and practices align with legal requirements," she stated.

Miranda also highlighted the importance of open communication: "We are also committed to open and transparent communication, and you can expect to hear from us regularly."

Provost Karen Colley joined Miranda in addressing these challenges collectively. "Without question, we are confronting significant challenges. We will be more successful in addressing our challenges if we face them together," they expressed.
