UIC begins campuswide accessibility evaluation

In late 2023, a plan for a campuswide accessibility audit was developed to gather input from UIC stakeholders and guidance from consultants. The aim is to make the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) more inclusive and accessible. This initiative was guided by the Campus Infrastructure Accessibility Subcommittee of the Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of Persons with Disabilities and led by Planning, Sustainability, and Project Management.

The audit focused on evaluating the accessibility of university-owned properties, including pedestrian walkways, facility entrances, public spaces within buildings, centrally scheduled classrooms, and assembly spaces. Acting on feedback collected during this process, UIC will move into the next phase involving on-site evaluations of current accessibility conditions. These evaluations will provide guidance on construction and renovation needed to eliminate identified barriers.

Specific areas under evaluation include university-owned exterior walkways, interior public spaces such as lobbies and corridors, elevators, public restrooms, doors accessible from public corridors, centrally scheduled classrooms, and assembly spaces. The evaluations are set to begin this semester and will continue for approximately 24 months. Despite their extensive nature, these assessments are expected to have minimal impact on faculty, staff, students, and overall campus operations.

For any inquiries regarding this process, individuals can contact pspm@uic.edu. The evaluation represents a critical step in helping UIC prioritize necessary work for creating a more inclusive campus environment.

"We appreciate your cooperation as this work takes place."
