Many reports have emerged in the media regarding presidential executive orders and their implementation. University leadership is actively monitoring these developments to understand any potential impact on campus operations.
A federal memo recently stated that "federal agencies must temporarily pause all activities related to obligation or disbursement of all Federal financial assistance, and other relevant agency activities that may be implicated by the executive orders." However, guidance from the Office of Management and Budget clarified that this temporary pause does not affect Pell Grants, federal student loans, or GI Bill payments. This ensures that the university's mission of access and excellence can continue without interruption.
The same guidance also confirmed that Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security benefits, VA benefits, and SNAP (food stamps) remain unaffected by the pause. These programs are crucial for many community members.
On Tuesday, January 28th, a federal judge issued a "brief administrative stay" until Monday, February 3rd at 5 p.m., temporarily blocking the freeze on federal financial assistance.
A webpage has been established to disseminate information from federal sponsors. Individuals receiving communication from sponsors are encouraged to share it with the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research via email at NotifyOSP@uic.edu.
University officials will keep monitoring the situation closely and provide updates as new information becomes available. They emphasize their commitment to maintaining access to educational, research, and clinical excellence.
