Surgeon General calls for cancer warnings on alcohol products

U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy has called for cancer warning labels to be added to alcoholic beverages, highlighting the increased risk of developing at least seven types of cancer associated with alcohol consumption. This announcement challenges the common belief that moderate drinking is beneficial.

Dr. Aashish Didwania, vice chair of education at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, supports this initiative. "The news is helpful as few people know there is an association between alcohol and cancer, and it further reverses the misbelief that moderate drinking is healthy," said Didwania. He emphasized, "Moderate drinking is not healthy."

Didwania, who also serves as a professor of general internal medicine and medical education at Northwestern Medicine, is available for media interviews starting Saturday. Interested parties can contact Kristin Samuelson to arrange discussions on topics such as what constitutes moderate drinking and how it increases cancer risk.

"The news is controversial as it is a notable change from the past recommendations and is suggesting warning labels for evidence that is based on associations more than causation, and for risk levels that we need to further research and interpret," Didwania noted.
