On December 17, the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) conducted a series of emergency response exercises aimed at strengthening its preparedness for potential crises. The UIC Office of Preparedness and Response, in collaboration with UIC Utilities and Energy Services, organized a tabletop and functional exercise on the Chicago campus. This exercise focused on the university's ability to respond to utility failures that could affect critical operations.

Later, on December 19, another exercise was held in partnership with the UIC College of Medicine Regional Dean’s Office at the UIC Health Sciences Campus-Rockford. This session simulated an active shooter scenario to evaluate the campus' prevention and response capabilities.

The exercises were designed to enhance UIC's preparedness through expert discussions and role-playing. Participants worked on coordinating response activities across departments and agencies, conducting incident assessments, facilitating communication, synchronizing efforts with strategic plans, and planning for long-term recovery.

The drills evaluated components of UIC’s Emergency Operations Plan with emphasis on the Campus Incident Response Team's roles. These sessions provided opportunities to refine emergency response skills and improve institutional resilience.

UIC ALERT, the university's emergency notification system, is tested monthly to ensure efficiency during emergencies like severe weather or operational disruptions.
