Public opinion poll shows vital role of chambers in community prosperity

Results from a recent nationwide public opinion poll underscore the importance of chambers of commerce in fostering community prosperity. Conducted by The Harris Poll for the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE), the survey reveals that 81% of U.S. adults consider their local chamber a trusted resource and partner for businesses. Furthermore, about nine in ten respondents believe their local chamber significantly contributes to economic growth (90%) and addresses community challenges (88%).

Sheree Anne Kelly, ACCE president & CEO, stated, “The poll’s findings assert the crucial role chambers of commerce play for businesses, economies and communities. Chambers are trusted and innovative organizations. As a result, we are seeing tremendous momentum to bring even more bold leadership and lasting impact on the communities we serve.”

The poll highlights several key insights: 64% of those familiar with their local chamber are inclined to purchase from member businesses, while 63% would recommend such businesses to others. Additionally, 76% agree that chambers act as stewards of strong local economies; 74% believe they create jobs and promote development; and 72% see them addressing community issues.

Business owners also recognize this advocacy role—65% view their local chamber as an advocate for beneficial initiatives and policies, while 62% feel supported in their business growth by these organizations.

Despite this recognition, there is a desire for greater awareness: 70% wish to know more about their chamber's work. Interests include understanding their community impact (49%), general information about chambers (43%), and identifying member businesses (42%).

The Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce exemplifies this trust through its support for Chicago's business landscape via initiatives and events aimed at established firms and new entrepreneurs alike. By enhancing member visibility, it fosters consumer loyalty and strengthens Chicago's economy.

With three-quarters affirming chambers' role in economic resilience, the Chicagoland Chamber’s advocacy helps drive growth specific to Chicago's needs. This aligns with findings that show widespread belief in chambers' ability to tackle community issues—reflecting commitments like workforce development.
