Karen Colley Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs | University Of Illinois At Chicago
The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) will observe America Recycles Day on Friday, November 15. The event is organized by the Planning, Sustainability and Project Management department and aims to engage the campus community in recycling activities.
Recycling collections will be held at Student Center East from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and at Student Center West from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Participants can visit the green Sustainability at UIC tables to learn more about recycling initiatives and bring items like batteries, writing utensils, plastic bags/stretchy plastic film, and personal electronics for recycling.
The initiative encourages students, faculty, and staff to actively participate in UIC's recycling efforts by adhering to specific guidelines:
- Employees are required to take their desk trash contents to central collection areas for appropriate disposal since building service workers do not service personal trash receptacles.
- Recyclable items must be empty, clean, and dry before being placed in bins to prevent contamination. "If in doubt, throw it out" serves as a helpful guideline.
- Cardboard boxes should be flattened and placed behind hallway bins. This directive applies to all who receive deliveries, including those in labs and clinics.
Specially marked bins for plastic bags, pens, markers, and batteries are available at various locations including Student Center East, Student Center West, the Student Services Building, the Physical Plant Building, and the College of Medicine.
Office supplies made of plastic and metal should not go into office recycling bins but can be donated to UIC’s Great Stuff Exchange for repurposing. Furniture cannot be recycled.
