Illinois Tech reports record-breaking student enrollment growth

Mallik Sundharam Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs | Illinois Institute Of Technology

Illinois Institute of Technology (Illinois Tech) has reported a 27% increase in student enrollment over the past three years, marking the highest fall enrollment in more than three decades. Applications have doubled since fall 2021, with a notable 69% rise in first-year applications over the past three years and a 35% increase since last year. First-year admits have also grown by 52% over the past three years and 36% since last fall.

The university's growth surpasses national and regional averages. According to National Student Clearinghouse Research Center data, Illinois Tech's enrollment gains are five times the national average of 5% and nine times the Midwest's average of 3%. This year alone saw a more than 3% increase in overall enrollment, with graduate enrollment rising by 9%.

Innovative programs at Illinois Tech continue to attract students despite challenges in higher education. The Stuart School of Business experienced a significant 73% enrollment increase since last year. The Elevate program has contributed to record-breaking enrollment this semester by offering co-curricular activities and hands-on experiences.

Amid demographic shifts affecting college-bound populations, Illinois Tech is experiencing growth. A remarkable 36% year-over-year growth in applications highlights its resilience. For Fall 2024, Pell Grant recipients make up 39% of all degree-seeking undergraduates, with new undergraduate students receiving these grants at an even higher rate.

"We are proud to uphold Illinois Tech’s mission as an opportunity engine that fosters innovation and progress," says Mallik Sundharam, vice president for enrollment management and student affairs.

Hispanic and Latino student enrollment has increased by 30%, now representing over a quarter of full-time undergraduate students. "I see the great value of giving communities that have been underrepresented...the opportunity to provide that personal and professional transformation," says Provost Kenneth T. Christensen.

Illinois Tech ranks #35 on the New York Times College-Access Index for economic diversity and #29 nationally for Best Value Schools by U.S. News & World Report for 2025.

"As a private university with a public mission...our role as a national leader in delivering education that is both accessible and transformative," adds Sundharam.

Located in Chicago, Illinois Tech offers degrees across various fields including engineering, computing, architecture, business, design, science, human sciences, and law. Its Elevate program ensures students gain hands-on experience alongside personalized mentorships aimed at job readiness.
