The Cook County Assessor's office has released initial property assessments in Thorton Township and invites Southland property taxpayers to attend in-person appeal workshops at the end of August. The Barbershop News Network (BNN) encourages owners and clients to attend one of these workshops to learn more about property assessments and appeals.
“I strongly encourage property owners to review their reassessment notice to ensure their property characteristics and market value reflect their home,” Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi said in a press release. “It is important to understand that assessments in Cook County reflect market value over the last three years. My office will be partnering with Cassandra Elston, Thornton Township Assessor to assist property owners and explain reassessments in their community,” he continued.
The press release says that property owners will be given an opportunity to appeal their assessment if the property characteristics listed on an assessment notice are incorrect or if the estimated market value of a property is significantly more than what it could sell for in the current real estate market. According to the Cook County Assessor’s Office, appeals for Thornton Township property values can be filed until Tuesday, Sept. 5.
The Assessor's Office is highly motivated to be transparent and strives to involve itself in grassroots outreach efforts such as the Barbershop Network News (BNN), the organization says. BNN encourages Southland barbershop owners, clients and community members to attend one of the available workshops to learn more about the assessment appeals process.
“We are here to help property owners. Residents are encouraged to attend a workshop to address their concerns regarding their reassessment notices. The Cook County Assessor’s Office will present information about how to understand their reassessment notice and explain how values are determined,” Thornton Township Assessor Cassandra Elston said, according to the press release.
Every year, the Assessor's Office conducts reassessments for one-third of the county, the release said. For the year 2023, the reassessment is taking place in the southern and western suburbs of Cook County. This includes the municipalities within Thornton Township, namely Burnham, Calumet City, Dixmoor, Dolton, East Hazel Crest, Phoenix, South Holland, Thornton, Blue Island, Glenwood, Harvey, Hazel Crest, Homewood, Lansing, Markham, Posen and Riverdale.
To learn more about property assessments and appeals, residents can attend an in-person appeal workshop on Thursday, Aug. 24, in Spanish from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Harvey City Hall, or Thursday, Aug. 24, from 6:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at Lester L. Long Fieldhouse in Dolton.
