Lightfoot: 'The @cta Red Line Extension Project will further connect people to opportunities across the city'

CTA's Red Line Extension Project advanced to the project funding phase.

"The @cta Red Line Extension Project will further connect people to opportunities across the city," Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot said.

The Red Line Extention complements a $425 million project, the Red Ahead Program, which among other things, has updated all stations on the redline to be fully accessible. The extension will serve the south side of Chicago; the new track extends the CTA Red Line from 95th to 130th street with four new stops along the way, which will also be fully accessible.

"Public Transportation is essential to the vitality of the city of Chicago...so many people rely on public transportation," Lester Barclay, Chairman of the Chicago Transit Board, said.

December 21, 2020, The Chicago Transit Authority confirmed that it received approval from the Federal Transit Administration to enter the project development phase of a grant program for the Red Line Extension project, which is just one of the required steps in a series that takes years to get through. However, the Chicago Transit Authority is confident of the new project timeline, which estimates the start of construction in 2025, with service beginning in 2029.

November 16, 2022, Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot proposed a new Transit Tax Increment Financing, which will provide financial support for the $3.6 billion Red Line Extension project.

"The Red Line Extension project represents one of the most critical investments in CTA's history and will undoubtedly be a transformative development for our Far South Side community," Mayor Lightfoot said

According to the release from Mayor Lightfoot, the proposed Transit TIF legislation includes measures that would generate up to $959 million in local funds and leverage up to $2.1 billion in Federal Transit Administration funding. The project has already received $30 from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
