'We’ve bought cars, we’ve paid mortgages, so many medical bills': Tinley Park police sergeant on nonprofit organization

The Village of Tinley Park's Board of Trustees took time to highlight several organizations and businesses in the village, including one aimed at helping families during the holiday season.

The nonprofit called Tinley Wish has been in operation for 27 years. Tinley Park Police Sgt. Chris Butler, who serves as the organization's president, spoke about Tinley Wish's mission during the Nov. 15 board meeting.

"We only have a couple of rules. The rules are you have to live in Tinley Park and we can’t give you cash," Butler said during the meeting. "So we’ll help with a lot of things, a lot of bills, gifts, just about anything you can think of. We’ve bought cars, we’ve paid mortgages, so many medical bills I couldn’t even begin to think about."

The charity, founded by two police patrolmen, has helped low-income families during the holidays since its inception.

Butler said the goal is to help three families this year, but may have to forgo the traditional public delivery since some of the families the organization will be helping are dealing with serious medical issues and can't be exposed to others. Butler said the organization still intends to celebrate the commitment of all the employees in some shape or form.

Patricia Zemar, the proprietor of Tinley Massage Therapy, was also invited by the board to the meeting as a token of appreciation. The massage industry places a strong emphasis on reducing stress, encouraging physical healing and boosting the immune system. Zemar was excited to have her own company in the village, given that she has more than 20 years of expertise in the industry.

Family Hyundai was acknowledged by the board as well, but no representatives were able to attend the meeting.
