The Alexander S. Pissios Family Foundation has entered into a partnership with Gateway to Learning (GTL), an organization that supports adults with neurodiversity and intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD) in finding meaningful employment. As part of this collaboration, GTL’s employment services division will now be known as The Alexander S. Pissios Family Foundation Employment Services.
Gateway to Learning operates several social enterprises, including Dorothy’s Sweet Shoppe in Lincoln Square, where employees receive workforce training and community engagement opportunities. The shop is open to the public and aims to foster inclusion while providing job experience for participants.
Employment at GTL goes beyond simply securing jobs; it emphasizes advocacy, independence, and dignity for people with IDD. Participants are encouraged to make decisions about their career paths, receive individualized support, and develop life skills through hands-on learning experiences. Employment services include pre-employment training, job exploration, coaching, and support for competitive integrated employment.
Noe, a participant who found work at Home Goods this year through GTL’s program, shared his perspective: “I’m a hard worker, and I will prove my worth to you, you’ll see. I have skills to work and can show I can do it. And prove it to everybody and myself.”
The Alexander S. Pissios Family Foundation has pledged multi-year funding to expand GTL’s employment programming. This commitment aims to enhance resources available for individuals seeking fulfilling careers and greater independence.
Kathryn H. Lavin, MSW, CEO of Gateway to Learning stated: “We are so proud of this gift and partnership. The Alexander S. Pissios Family Foundation’s commitment to uplifting communities has created a pathway to employment for so many talented individuals. Yet, we need the help of small and large businesses alike to hold that door open, and to be an instrumental part of inclusive employment.”
