City Council members raise concerns over proposed “jobs tax” in FY26 budget

Several City Council members have recently voiced concerns about the proposed “jobs tax” and other aspects of Chicago’s FY26 City Budget. In a joint statement, a group expressed appreciation for these actions, stating:

“We are encouraged by this week raising serious concerns about the proposed ‘jobs tax’ and other elements of the FY26 City Budget. Their leadership reflects a growing recognition that Chicago’s future depends on smart, sustainable choices that strengthen our competitiveness and signal clearly: .”

The statement highlighted worries that certain policies could discourage employers from maintaining or expanding jobs in the city, which would impact both residents and businesses. The group emphasized the importance of collaboration between council members, businesses investing in their wards, and workers.

“Policies that discourage employers from keeping and growing jobs in our city ultimately hurt every Chicagoan and every business. By listening to the businesses that invest in their wards and the residents who work in those jobs, these City Council members are demonstrating the power of collaboration.”

Looking ahead, they expressed hope for ongoing engagement with all alderpersons and stakeholders who support economic growth for Chicago.

“We look forward to continued engagement with all alderpersons and stakeholders who share a vision for an economically vibrant, inclusive, and fiscally responsible Chicago—one built on growth, effective policy, and opportunity for all.”
