Marie Lynn Miranda UIC Chancellor | University Of Illinois At Chicago
Beginning November 1, federal food-assistance program changes will affect many individuals in the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) community. University officials are encouraging students, faculty, and staff to become familiar with available food and well-being resources both on campus and in surrounding neighborhoods.
The UIC Pop-Up Pantry, located at Student Center East Tower on the second floor, is open Wednesday and Thursday afternoons for all UIC students. The pantry provides free food and requires registration through the Wellness Center. Another resource, Dion’s Chicago Dream Vault in the Student Center West Basement, offers health sciences students free fruits and vegetables. Access to these lockers is limited; interested students must register with the Wellness Center to be placed on a waiting list.
Students facing personal hardship can seek help from the Office of the Dean of Students by submitting a basic needs form if they lack adequate access to meals. Additionally, U & I Care Meals supports enrolled undergraduate, graduate, and professional students who need immediate assistance by offering up to 10 meal swipes per applicant.
Several colleges within UIC also provide their own food resources for students. Students are encouraged to contact their college’s student affairs office for more information about these programs.
Mental health support is available through the UIC Counseling Center, which offers confidential services at no extra cost to eligible students. Crisis services can be accessed at any time by calling 312-996-3490; after-hours callers should select option “2.” Statewide mental health assistance includes the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988), Crisis Text Line (text “HOME” to 741-741), and CARE team response via 911.
Michael Ginsburg, PhD, Special Advisor to the Chancellor for Student Affairs, stated: "We understand that changes to assistance programs can create uncertainty. Our goal is to make sure you have clear, reliable information and access to the resources that can help support you. If you find yourself in need, please take advantage of the supports listed above or connect with our teams for more information or guidance."
Faculty and staff are encouraged to share this information with colleagues and students who may benefit from these resources. Community members able to assist are invited to donate to initiatives such as the Pop-Up Pantry or local food banks.
