Chicago City Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Irvin took part in the city's Diwali celebration at City Hall, joining Mayor Brandon Johnson, members of the Indian American Business Council (IABC), and community leaders. The event was organized with support from the Consulate General of India and highlighted both Chicago’s cultural diversity and its commitment to civic unity.
During her remarks, Treasurer Conyears-Irvin spoke about the importance of diversity in Chicago. “Diversity is our strength — our superpower,” she said to attendees that included young children. “You embody the world’s goodness. This builds bridges: today yours, tomorrow mine.”
The evening focused on strengthening ties between City Hall and Chicago’s Indian-American business community. Conyears-Irvin pointed out that economic inclusion and cultural understanding are connected goals for her office as it works to create opportunities throughout all neighborhoods.
Mayor Johnson also spoke at the event, reiterating his commitment to making Diwali an annual celebration at City Hall. He described Chicago as “a global city made stronger by its diversity.”
The festivities began with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony led by IABC President Ajeet Singh and Consul General Somnath Ghosh, followed by dance performances from Ajanta Chakraborty and her ensemble.
Treasurer Conyears-Irvin's participation reflected a broader effort within city government to promote inclusive growth so every community feels represented in both economic initiatives and cultural life.
As her office continues efforts around financial empowerment and civic engagement, events like this Diwali celebration aim to further unity through embracing diversity.
