UIC addresses concerns over increased external law enforcement presence near campus

Marie Lynn Miranda UIC Chancellor | University Of Illinois At Chicago

The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) has issued a statement addressing concerns among its campus community following increased activity by external law enforcement agencies, including immigration enforcement, in the city. UIC officials noted that while these operations may not be directly connected to the university, their proximity to campus can cause anxiety for students, faculty, and staff.

“As an urban institution, our campus is bordered by public streets where external law enforcement agencies may operate independently of university oversight. While such activity may not be directly related to UIC, we know that its visibility near campus can cause distress and worry among our students, faculty and staff,” the statement said.

UIC emphasized its commitment to the safety and well-being of everyone on campus. The university will continue to provide updates through its Key Issues webpage as new information becomes available.

“To date, there has not been any confirmed presence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents on campus. We have a clear protocol: If you see external law enforcement on campus, call UIC Police at 312-996-2830,” according to the announcement from Kevin Booker, Chief of UIC Police.

The university advised members of its community to carry their identification cards at all times and avoid unnecessary risks near large gatherings or protests. It also recommended keeping vehicle documentation up-to-date and contacting UIC Police or using the UIC Safe app if feeling unsafe.

In situations involving contact with external law enforcement on campus, individuals are encouraged to present their identification when requested, remain calm and respectful, cooperate with instructions while knowing their rights, refer requests for access or information about individuals to UIC Police at 312-996-2830, and refrain from accepting documents presented by outside officers.

International students and faculty who encounter immigration-related emergencies should contact the Office of International Services during business hours at 312-996-3121 or after hours at 312-415-0334.

The statement concluded with encouragement for those affected by recent events to seek support through student health services or Employee Assistance Programs and familiarize themselves with available safety resources on campus.

“We appreciate your care for one another during this time and encourage anyone who feels impacted by these events to reach out for support through UIC’s student health and wellness and Employee Assistance Programs. Please also become familiar with the campus safety resources and tools available to support you,” Booker stated.

“Together, we can support each other and strengthen our UIC community.”
