Illinois Tech students unite through diverse theatrical collaboration

Illinois Tech students have been actively participating in 33rd Street Productions, a theater group that brings together individuals from various academic backgrounds. Charlie Sanders, a third-year psychology student, expressed the collective passion of the group: “The best part about 33rd Street Productions is that everyone is here because they want to be.”

John Muñoz, an aerospace engineering student in his third year, shared his surprise at discovering such a well-established theater group at Illinois Tech. He noted the diversity within the group and their collaborative efforts: “I was very surprised to see such a well-established theater group that works with so many different people of all different majors and backgrounds that really just come together and try to make something really good.”

Eli Hoedl, who studies data science, appreciates the balance between academics and creative pursuits: “Nothing’s better than having a stressful day of classes where I’m like working hard and stuff and then I just get to come to rehearsal and have fun for a couple hours and not have to worry about all the other stuff.” Hoedl also values the opportunity to practice skills like public speaking.

First-year information technology and management student Isis Espinoza praised the welcoming community within 33rd Street Productions: “I really like the community that we have built here. I mean I just joined, and I was received with open arms, which is really nice.”

Sanders emphasized the artistic drive behind members' participation: “Everyone is here because there is something artistic that they want to chase and this is the space that provides that.” He further mentioned how involvement in productions leaves lasting memories for participants.

Muñoz highlighted Illinois Tech's support for diverse interests across its student body: “Illinois Tech really makes sure to provide so many opportunities to work with everyone from the school, no matter what major or what year you’re in. They have just pretty much every single organization that you can think of.”

Sanders concluded by reflecting on past members’ experiences: “I’ve had people join for just a semester. They’ve been in the play, they’ve loved it, and then they’ve gone on to different things, but they will always carry the fact that they were with 33rd Street Productions and they produced something magical.”
