Emerging Leaders Chicago recently hosted its annual Pride Month event at Hopsmith Tavern on June 26. The gathering brought together professionals, allies, and community members to highlight diverse voices within the workforce. The event featured a panel of speakers who shared personal stories about how LGBTQ+ identity intersects with leadership, innovation, and public service.
Julio Rodriguez spoke about his experiences as a gay man and emphasized the importance of maintaining one's power and sense of belonging. He stated, “…never give up your power, whether you’re a woman, whether you’re gay, whether you’re older, whether you’re somebody with a disability. Never let somebody tell you: you do not have power.”
The evening included a special proclamation presented by Rodriguez on behalf of the Governor’s Office and the Illinois DCEO. This announcement affirmed the state's commitment to inclusivity and equality.
Nicole McCarthy discussed the significance of celebration during times of social isolation. She noted that events like Pride provide spaces for people to express their true selves. “We all know that Pride began as a protest, but the soul of it remains the same. We’re reclaiming space in a world that consistently tries to erase us,” McCarthy said.
Mark Wuchte shared his journey as a gay man in the workforce and encouraged others to embrace their authentic selves. He advised, “Always remember to be your true self, and always remember the people around you will accept you—and if they don’t, they’re not worth [your] time.”
The program left attendees with a renewed sense of purpose and connection. The stories shared highlighted community as central to progress toward an inclusive future where identity is seen as strength rather than limitation.
