National Public Housing Museum opens in Chicago honoring residents' experiences

The National Public Housing Museum has officially opened its doors at 919 S. Ada Street in Chicago, marking a significant milestone for public housing history and community storytelling. The museum is located in the last remaining building of the Jane Addams Homes and serves as the first cultural institution in the United States dedicated to sharing the stories of public housing residents.

Chicago's long-standing issues with affordable housing have disproportionately affected Black and Brown communities, making this new museum a critical addition to the city’s cultural landscape. It aims to present both the struggles and aspirations of those who lived in public housing.

Mayor Brandon Johnson highlighted the importance of preserving these narratives: “This is the preservation of vital history stories. When oppressive regimes come in, they try to eliminate history and our culture. Because if you can take away someone’s story, you can take away your existence. So we are building not just stories, but a more just and ethical society.”

The project took nearly two decades to realize, emphasizing memory, care, and community involvement throughout its development. Sunny Fischer, Co-Founder and Board Chair, acknowledged the collective effort behind the museum: “This museum was built by hundreds of dedicated people who have made it a reality,” she said. “They shared their stories, and they patiently provided their labor and love and support over the last 18 years.”

Francine Washington from the Chicago Housing Authority also serves on the museum's board, reinforcing its mission to tell complex stories while envisioning a more equitable future.

The museum offers free general admission with guided tours available by reservation from Wednesday through Sunday.
